Space Saving Solutions for Condos

While a majority of our available StreetSide condos are anything but small, it’s no surprise that storage space is something that most homeowners can never get enough of. While many believe the solution to storage woes is more space – be that in a garage, basement, or an additional room, space isn’t always the answer. Often times these storage spaces become grounds for clutter and we end up keeping many unwanted or unused items. The result is that useable, functional storage ends up being just as lacking as if we didn’t have that space in the first place. So what is the solution? Store smarter, not more. Whether you’ve got a full basement (like at our Homes by StreetSide), an attached garage with a utility room (like our Bluestem condos), or the use of a storage locker (like our District and Bridgwater condos), these space-saving storage solutions can help you control the clutter and make the most out of your living space.

Take a peek at some of these ingenious space-saving solutions (and follow us on Pinterest for even more ideas):

IKEA Sverige. Bed with storage underneath - brilliant!

This incredible Ikea bed makes wasted space into useable, hidden storage! Perfect if closet space is hard to come by.

So smart. You can remove one without having to remove them all. Turn a vertical bakeware organizer on its end and secure it to the cabinet wall with cable clips.

This is one of those” how did I never think of that?” moments! Such a great way to maximize vertical space in kitchen cupboards. Brilliant idea from none other than Marta Stewart.

shelves + clean baskets

Make the most out of extra wall space by utilizing utility shelves and bins. This would be a great option for a garage or utility room, but would also fit right into a kitchen (this industrial look especially complements our District condos interiors!).

For that annoying little space in the kitchen between the cooker and the fridge.

Nooks and crannies often just end up collecting dust bunnies and loose socks – so make the most out of your “niches” with inexpensive shelving options available at many big box stores.

small space storage idea.

Find space you never knew you had. If your linen closet has become an everything-else closet (or you don’t have a linen closet at all), look up! A simple bracketed shelf above the door is a great use of space. Thanks again to Martha.

Looking for other great ways to maximize your space and store smart? Our StreetSide team came together and brainstormed our top 4 tips for organizing your space below:

1)      Ditch the junk. We all have it. Those things that we never use/never wear, but can’t seem to let go of. Take a long and hard look at whether you are likely to use it anytime within the next couple years, and if the answer is no, sell it on Kijiji, donate or recycle it. This will help you properly organize the things you truly use and love – and maybe you’ll even make a little cash to go towards new storage solutions!

2)      Give everything a home. The key to keeping things neat and properly stored is to give them a place of their own. When something is finished being used, it needs to have a spot waiting for it to go back to – or else things will quickly get out of control.

3)      Use bins and labels. Smaller items are difficult to keep tidy and in one spot because they tend to move around and fall out place. Corral similar items in bins and use labels to specify their contents for easy retrieval the next time you need to use them.

4)      Use your space in creative ways. If you are having difficulties thinking outside of the box, head over to Pinterest to peruse the endless inspiration photos of creative storage. With a little ingenuity and elbow grease you can multiply the storage efficiency of a space many times over!

Take a Look Inside | Tour District Condos

District Interiors

It’s always a challenge to look at a black and white two dimensional drawing and imagine how you would live in such a space – which is why we are very excited to bring you the “Take a Look Inside” series. Our first series focuses on our District Condos at 110 James. Six floor plans, eight different suites represented, all finished and ready to move in to. We captured them all in photos and video so that you don’t just have to just look at a floor plan and display suite photos; you can actually take a look inside the specific suite you might be considering! Although our stunning loft condos are even better in person, it’s still a great way to view our floor plans and help narrow down your favourites before coming in for a personal tour. Check out the six floor plans below, and contact Rhonda and Rebecca at 204-942-3584 when you’re ready to come visit us!

Click to view the floor plans in this series: the Pacific, the King, the Lombard, the Waterfront, the Pioneer and the James.

Also, as our 132 James building continues to progress, we are now offering escorted hard hat tours through the building for interested buyers. Make sure to call in advance to book an appointment and to help figure out the best floor plans to tour for your needs.

How to Style a Brick Wall | Loft Condos at District

brick wall shelvesSource

Not much rivals the brick wall when it comes to an injection of character in a home or condo. There’s something about exposed brick that is just so… charming. Perhaps it’s the history it holds – a story of another time that serves as a constant reminder of the past. It’s also a welcome departure from basic drywall – a wall that has enough personality on it’s own that you don’t even need to paint it.

StreetSide’s own interior design consultant meets with owners of our charming 100-year old conversion loft condos all the time and has some very insightful ideas for decorating your own brick wall at our new District Condos!

  1. Leave the brick as natural looking as you can, it creates character instantly
  2. Decorating your brick wall should be determined by its location.  If an existing wall is in the kitchen area, leave the brick to create an amazing backsplash.  If it’s in the dining room, put a gorgeous credenza up against it, if it’s in the living room or bedroom, use the brick wall as the focal point instead of a painted accent wall
  3. Hang multiple sized frames with your most precious pictures or art on it
  4. Floating shelves show off your collectibles while maintaining the character of the brick
  5. Try not to over decorate…the brick is an accessory in itself!

feature wall

luxe lightsSource

Another way to really make that brick wall shine is to juxtapose it with materials and fixtures that play off the rustic charm of the brick. Large gilded mirrors, dazzling light fixtures; it’s unexpected in an industrial space and an exciting twist on a loft.

What would you do with a brick wall in a loft condo? Share your ideas on Facebook, or pop into our District display suite at 110 James Avenue is Winnipeg’s Exchange District to see a brick wall in our new Winnipeg loft condos for sale for yourself!
